Leigh Walker, Program Manager
Leigh Walker brings more than 27 years of experience to the field of education. She completed her undergraduate studies at Auburn University, where she received a Bachelor of Science degree specializing in Mild Learning Handicaps. Furthering her academic journey, Leigh obtained a Master's degree in Elementary Education from the University of Mobile. Her extensive background equips her with a deep understanding of diverse learning needs, making her a dedicated advocate for student success.
Holly Miller
Holly is a graduate of East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma. She holds a bachelor's degree in Human Services Counseling and Services for the Deaf and Rehabilitation. She comes to Read Write from Children's of Alabama in Birmingham, Alabama, where she worked in the Hearing and Speech Department.
Holly is a licensed Audiology Assistant through the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and the Alabama Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology (ABESPA). She has enjoyed applying her understanding of language and speech development to the field of learning disabilities. Her training includes Barton Reading and Spelling System tutor training.
Football takes Holly around the country—her husband is currently a coach at Syracuse University in New York. Go Orange!
Sonya Maddox
Sonya Maddox graduated from The University of Alabama in Birmingham with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary and Early Childhood Education. She has 13 years of experience teaching 2nd grade and has been trained in the Barton Reading and Spelling System. Her home is full with her husband, four kids, one dog, and a bearded dragon! Spending time with her family is the best part of her day. Some of their favorite things to do together are camping and boating. Sonya is excited to teach the students of Read Write!
Susan Mitchell
Susan is a retired fourth-grade teacher with 28 years of classroom experience and a passion for literacy education. Originally from Gulf Shores and now residing in Robertsdale, Alabama, she currently serves as a reading intervention tutor at Fairhope East.
She earned both her Bachelor’s (1993) and Master’s (1999) degrees in Elementary Education from the University of South Alabama. Known for her nurturing and student-centered approach, she believes in fostering growth through a positive, encouraging learning environment—whether in person or online.
She and her husband have two grown sons and are eagerly awaiting the birth of their first grandchild. Outside of education, she enjoys time with family and caring for her three rescue cats.
Symphani Newman
Symphani received her B.S. in Elementary Education with an Early Childhood Concentration from Pensacola Christian College. She has nearly 10 years of teaching experience and has taught at both early learning centers, elementary schools, and after school reading intervention programs. Over the years, Symphani has gained experience in curricula such as ABeka, Saxon, and SIPPS but has seen many students who have struggled learning because of dyslexia. It was at this point that she became interested in learning more about dyslexia and curricula that could help students. Being new to Orton-Gillingham training and the Barton Reading and Spelling curriculum, Symphani is excited to see students succeed! Living in Cantonment with her husband, 1 dog, and friends, Symphani loves to visit local produce markets, go on outdoor adventures, and enjoy “big nature.” Symphani is excited to be part of the Read Write team and continue the mission to assist each individual in reaching their full potential as they grow and pursue their interests in life.
